Following July’s General Election, which resulted in the formation of a new Labour government, leading handling and storage solutions specialist ZARGES is calling for the introduction of more stringent legislation on the safe storage of lithium-ion batteries.
Indeed, the rise in incidents involving lithium-ion batteries has highlighted the urgent need for robust regulatory measures. These batteries, widely used in consumer electronics, electric vehicles, and renewable energy storage, pose significant risks if not handled correctly. Recent fires in residential and commercial settings underscore the potential hazards of inadequate storage of hazardous goods.
Neil Harper, UK sales manager for ZARGES, says: “The new Labour government has a crucial opportunity to set the agenda on this pressing safety issue. Implementing firmer legislation on lithium-ion battery storage at home and commercially is about protecting lives and property.”
In the past year, there have been several high-profile fires linked to lithium-ion batteries. According to an investigation by the Guardian, 11 deaths in London have been attributed to e-scooter fires, while more recently, a major fire in Manchester which left one person dead has been blamed on an e-scooter bursting into flames.
ZARGES offers a comprehensive solution to these challenges with its K470 universal battery box. This innovative product is designed specifically for the safe storage and transportation of lithium-ion batteries. The K470 box features:
- Robust Construction: Made from high-strength aluminium, it provides superior protection against physical damage
- Accredited: Tested and approved as hazardous goods packaging in accordance with UN requirements
- Successfully-fire tested: Flame does not spread to adjacent batteries, with the container surface remaining below 100 degrees centigrade
- Fire-proof padding: For additional peace of mind
"Our K470 universal battery box is engineered to address the specific risks associated with lithium-ion batteries” Neil adds. "We urge the new government to consider solutions like ours that enhance safety and compliance."
